Honda All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

AWD vs 4WD - What's the Difference?

Looking for ample traction while driving on a variety of road surfaces? We recommend learning more about the differences between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. While they sound like they're providing the same function, there are actually differences between the two. Understanding what each drivetrain offers will give you the opportunity to choose a vehicle that's perfect for your needs in Phoenix.

What is All-Wheel Drive?

You have an all-wheel drive vehicle if the powertrain under the hood has the potential to provide power to the front and rear wheels. The full-time AWD function will move all of the wheels continuously, while the part-time function will only power two of the wheels unless additional traction is needed. The switch is made automatically on behalf of your vehicle. You don't have to engage any switch or lever to make the traction happen.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

Larger vehicles that carry a lot of weight are often equipped adequately with four-wheel drive. This system is comprised of differentials in the front, center, and rear, powered by transfer cases and couplings. All four wheels will receive power as needed, with both full-time and part-time modes included. In this system, you do control what mode you're using. We recommend that you use the low setting if you're in need of maximum traction on very slick road surfaces. You can switch over to the high setting if you need traction but at a lower level.

Showcase Honda has a knowledgeable staff of employees at our Phoenix location that can provide you with more information on the differences between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
