Every vehicle, no matter its make or model, is subject to wear and tear. As a result, your vehicle may produce unsettling sounds. We understand, and we want to help. Let's consider some common automotive sounds and the possible reasons you may hear them.

Squeaky Brakes

Given its purpose and design, your braking system endures substantial stress and wear. Keeping the system's parts in top shape requires adjustment or full service. Typically, your brakes will make noise when service is necessary. If you repeatedly hear a squeaking sound when you apply your brakes, your brake pads may require replacement. We recommend service soon. Squeaking, grinding brakes cause more part damage, and cost you more, each time you push your brake pedal.

Engine Rattling

Several issues can cause an engine to rattle. Likely possibilities include overheating, insufficient fuel octane and improper ignition timing. In each of those cases, air and fuel mix at the wrong ratio inside one or more of your engine's cylinders. Subsequently, early ignition occurs, and it can cause damage to your vehicle's valves, pistons and connecting rods.

Engine Clicking

When an engine clicks, the culprit is often low oil. If your vehicle has a dipstick, follow your user manual's instructions for properly checking your model's oil. Some models recommend checking the dipstick when the engine is cold. Others recommend running the engine first. Vehicles without dipsticks will notify you of insufficient oil levels on their instrument panels. If you hear clicking despite your car having sufficient oil, your oil system's upper valve line may require service.

Knocking Under the Hood

A knocking sound under your car's hood is never good. The source may be damage to the moving, metal parts in your engine, or it may be an issue with another major component. We recommend immediate service.

Engine Squealing

Engines typically squeal due to issues with serpentine belts or accessory belts. These belts convey some of your engine's energy to your vehicle's air conditioner, power steering and other accessories. If your vehicle is relatively young, you may need a belt adjusted. On older cars, engine squealing indicates that it's time to replace your belts.

If your vehicle is making unusual sounds, we can diagnose and service the issue at Showcase Honda. Feel free to contact or visit us today.
